Is Your Marketing Plan Ready for 2014?

marketing planning image

Your marketing plan needs to identify who your target customers are, how you will reach them, and how you will retain them. But, dig further. Ask yourself where they get their information, why they would use your business, and how you're different (and hopefully better) than your competition. These simple questions should be at the foundation of your marketing strategy.

Keep in mind, though, this discovery process is not a one-shot deal. Time passes, goals change, businesses grow and marketplaces shift, making it essential to review your marketing plan regularly. As we prepare for the new year, now is a great time to review yours.

Roadmap to Success

Your marketing plan should be your roadmap to success. Once you've identified your strategies, you'll want to break these down into actionable items. Refine them into monthly, weekly, daily plans for your marketing calendar. Consider last year. What worked? What didn't? What more needs to be done? How can you improve in 2014?

Mind Mapping

No marketing plan? Let's get moving. Grab paper and pencil or, if you prefer digital, open up your favorite mind mapping program. (MindNode on Mac is fantastic, or MindMeister in the browser for PC users.)

With your business at the center, note each possible marketing avenue for your business. Branch out each item into further ideas and opportunities. If you get stuck, refer back to those key questions regarding your target market. There's no right or wrong here, just put your thoughts down and you can revise them later. Once complete, you can use your diagram to help create your marketing calendar.
